JAMES W. DUNPHY

Counsel

 

James (Jim) initially joined the firm as an articling student in 1992. He became an associate in 1993 and then was a member of the partnership from 2000 to 2012. In 2018, Jim returned to WBA Law LLP as the firm’s tax specialist. James is a Chartered Professional Accountant and was a senior manager in the Audit Division of the Canada Revenue Agency for twelve years prior to commencing his legal career. He now practices in all areas of corporate and commercial law, with an emphasis on tax-effective transactions, including mergers and acquisitions and corporate reorganizations that are part of property settlements in matrimonial or relationship breakdowns. He is well known in the tax community as someone who can provide innovative tax solutions and fix mistakes using the Court of King's Bench Orders.

James is comfortable in organizing complex financings for any business, including farming operations, and provides advice to corporations and individuals on business structures and estate planning. In addition to his practice as a solicitor, James has appeared on behalf of clients in the Tax Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Appeal and Federal Court of Canada, the Court of Appeal of Alberta, Court of King’s Bench of Alberta and the Provincial Court of Alberta.

James was born in Québec and has strong ties to Montréal, where he holds seasons tickets to the Montréal Canadiens. He is also passionate about good food and good company.
